Excellent book, a really moving tale of a really different way of living a life, made me reevaluate my life, but I am a little tied down and conservative to make the change. Well worth a read
DEAR , STUART , I sent you a email soon after the BATH @ WEST show after reading your book , my wife is now reading it together we have been into dogs for some 57 years , my wife doe’snt want to finish the book as she is enjoying it so much , i do hope you continue to write such good books , many people no matter how much you try to help them as you say in your book you feel it is a waist of time , you win some you loose some !! , if only people would remember it is still a dog with its own instinct’s , i know of several people who bought there house but the dog owns it , keep up the good work, again i was very taken with your display a the show , showing what can be done even with a difficult dog i agree its your mental power over the dog . regards and many thanks
I just wanted to drop you a quick note to say thank you. I’m sure you speak to lots of people at lots of shows so you may not remember, but I spoke to you at scone game fair. On the Friday, I’m very pregnant and have 2 jack Russell’s, one of which had recently become aggressive/possessive over space.
My husband and I have done your energy/body language advice most days for just a few minutes since then and we have 2 MUCH happier and calmer and more secure dogs. It’s amazing how much more peace there is in iur house now. I’m sure we’re not ‘there’ yet, but we’ll keep it up and hope for the best.
Thank you. Your simple advice has made a big difference!!
I bought Stuart’s book last year after seeing the Dog and Duck show which was run by one of Stuart’s counterparts. The book is fascinating and while the ideas contained within might seem a bit off piste at first if you take his ideas, use them as a framework and really drill down into them and find the exact tweaks that you need the results are quite amazing. I was really glad to meet Stuart at the countryside show earlier in the year and while it may have taken me a few months I have finally gotten around to the promised review. I have used Stuarts methods on my two rescue dogs and the transformation is amazing. Gem we rescued six months ago after having been locked in a shed for two years with no contact with any other living being just a hole where food was shoved through occasionally!! She is now the happiest friendliest dog you can imagine and just yesterday I found her asleep in my shed… After all the negative associations she had with sheds this is massive!!! Trust me take Stuart’s ideas on board find the exact tweaks that make it work for you and live the dream. Too many people blame the wrong end of the leash…. Buy the book and live with the ideas for a few weeks then tell me I’m wrong… 🙂
This book is really well laid out and easy to read, either as a whole or to dip in an out of. An index would have been handy but given the ease of headings not essential.
Hi Stu, great to see you again we so admire watching you work at the shows, the book was fabulous! Very much looking forward to getting a copy of the next book by Chantal P.s. we mastered the shepherds whistle!
Dear Stuart Barnes. I have read your book from cover to cover and found it so informative. I’m a veterinary nurse and it has really helped me in handling dogs at work. I’ve been vet nursing for the last 14 years but since trying out some of the tips and techniques I learnt from the book it has helped in handling even the most unruly dogs! Which makes it alot easier! I also recommend the book to clients as well if they have training or behaviour issues as am sure it is worth any dog owner to read. Thank you for all the info in the book. It is most invaluable. Regards Liz
I used Stuart’s sage advice and it worked like a charm. A stray dog was trying to
approach my Ginger. I looked at it with my arms out; it stopped. I took a slight
step forward and it backed away! The dog was a German Shepherd and because I have
been attacked (but never bitten) I am afraid of them. My energy was confident, not
I recently was given a copy of a book called “The way of the dog, training by
instinct” by the author and friend of mine Stuart Barnes.
Although not aimed at gundogs, I must say the book is very good, its is easy to read
and gives a great insight into the dogs mind and its learning chain.
Stuart share some of his experiences as a traveler and explorer, something he as
funded himself (I am sure if he had done it on behalf of a university he would have
letters after his name) driven purely by his passion for nature and wildlife he has
study wild dogs in many continents and passes on his findings in an straight talking
no-nonsence manner that can benefit new dogs owners and experienced alike. A great
